Sustainable

About Wood2Size – Leading UK Timber Merchants

Wood2Size (trading name of Timbersource Limited) since 2001, our capacity has grown to 340,000 cubic feet. Along with our milling, production and external space. So for a sustainable environment, we supply timber in compliance with UKTR, and also offer FSC® or PEFC Certified timber.

UKTR United Kingdom Timber Regulation

So timber supply chains are regulated to ensure harvesting practices are legal, encourage sustainable harvesting practices. And support global forest governance. So anyone trading in timber and timber products in the United Kingdom must take steps to ensure that they originate from legal sources.

PEFC Sustainable Timber Certification

The PEFC Council (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes) is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation.

The PEFC provides a assurance. To buyers of wood and paper products that they are helping the sustainable management of forests. PEFC is a global umbrella. For the assessment and mutual understanding of national forest certification schemes developed in a multi-stakeholder process. These national schemes build upon the inter-governmental processes. For the promotion of forest management. A series of on-going mechanisms supported by 149 governments in the world, covering 85% of the world’s forest area. The

PEFC schemes account for over 126 million hectares of forest. So producing millions of tonnes of certified timber for the market – making PEFC the world’s largest Certification scheme.

FSC® Certification Sustainable

So Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) is an international Non-Profit Organisation dedicated to the promotion of responsible forest management. So the FSC® has developed a unique system of independent forest certification and product labelling, helping consumers identify timber and products from Sustainable and responsibly managed Woodlands. As a result the FSC® is an independent, Non-Profit, Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO).

The Process

So the process of certification involves inspecting forests to assess their management according to an agreed set of principles and criteria. Also these include recognition of indigenous peoples’ rights, long term Sustainability, economic viability and protection of wildlife. However a wide range of forests have already been certified, from Swedish pine plantations to Tropical Rainforests in Brazil. The FSC® system is backed by a range of environmental organisations. And these include WWF, Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, the National Trust and the Woodland Trust, as well as major companies, trade unions and other social groups.

So any timber company that gains the right to display the FSC® logo can say that their sourced timber comes from managed forests. Also more FSC® products mean that more FSC® Certified forests are being Sustainably managed for the long-term support of people and the planet.

So FSC® has developed 10 rules, that define good management. Also these rules are global, they can be applied to any forest in the world.

Principles for Forest Stewardship:

  • Compliance with laws and FSC®
  • Rights and responsibilities relating to land tenure and use
  • Indigenous peoples’ rights
  • Community relations and workers’ rights
  • Benefits from the forest
  • Environmental Impact
  • Management plan
  • Monitoring and Assessment
  • Maintenance of high Conservation value forests
  • Plantations
